How to VIDEO: Pre Poo / Hot Oil Treatment for Stronger, Healthier Hair
The saying ‘experience is the best teacher’ couldn’t be truer. One fateful wash day, I got too comfortable (and somewhat lazy) and decided to skip my usual pre-poo step.
Need I say, I regretted it because after washing and moisturising, my hair neither appeared nor felt as lustrous or hydrated as it used to. Plus due to tangles, my hair broke off a lot during the wash process (since a pre-poo is a good time to properly detangle prior to your wash).
Following this incident, I decided to make it a point to always pre-poo before a wash, even if it was for just a couple of minutes.
Pre-Poo (prep for shampoo): the process of prepping your hair with oils or conditioners, to reduce the stripping/drying effect of shampoos. Especially sulphate shampoos.
Conditioners, hair masks or even natural options like oils, honey & aloe vera plant gels are possible options for preparing the hair for a wash. When I am not in the mood of being an ‘oil mixologist’, or when I do not have that much time on my hands, I’d usually use just extra virgin olive oil for my pre-poo/oil treatment.
Olive oil is my go to pre-poo oil because it darkens, increases moisture, elasticity and best of all strengthens my strands. I’d usually use this with a few drops of growth stimulating oils like tea tree or peppermint oils.
Regular pre-poo
> Section hair
> Dampen each section and generously apply your preferred pre-poo product
> Leave pre-poo in hair for some time (ranging from 20 minutes to overnight)
> Wash, condition and moisturise hair as usual
Pre-Poo as a hot oil treatment
For this, I usually prefer to mix different oils for added benefits (see video as reference)
> Section hair
> Heat oil (or oils) for 30 seconds over hot water (steam)
> Generously apply now heated oils to dampened sections
> Cover hair in plastic cap, or use heat cap for deeper penetration and steaming effect
> Wash, condition and moisturise hair as usual
