Two years ago…my cousin walks into my room, looks around, walks into my bathroom looks around, then looks at me and goes “Amal you’re officially a Product Ho”. It was hilarious! And it was only then that I truly recognised and acknowledged that I am a hair and skin care product junkie………*hides face in faux shame*.
I am constantly buying hair and skin care products and more times than not, they turn out worth the buy. Before selecting, I take the time to do my research and go through what they do and what they contain. I’m more than happy to share what’s worked (or not worked) for me so this post is intended to better inform my readers about select products and to also influence their decision process for those who intend on purchasing any of them.
Also, be sure to watchthe review video at the end of this post so you get to actually see how some of these products work for my hair + the video will feature how I get my hair moisturised for up to 4 days using some these products 😉
Note: the ratings under each product are based on how effective they have been for my hair and are my opinion alone. Also, if you are unable to get some of these from the suggested stores, check out Konga.com.
♦ NEEM BLACK SOAP by ZeeZam Presents rating 8/10
I’d heard about how amazing and non-stripping black soap shampoo is for the hair so I decided to try our very own made in Nigeria product and boy was I pleased! Main Ingredients sheanut husks, cocoa pon husks, potash, neem & moringa oil, sheabutter. Pros 100% natural. Non-stripping and cleansed my scalp properly. Moisturising. Cons I usually do two wash rounds. The first wash did not lather and this caused me to assume that my hair was not getting a thorough cleanse. But by the second wash round, there was sufficient lathering. So it’s safe to say that the oils from my initial prepoo* could’ve served as a lather barrier during the first wash. Price Super affordable at N1000.00 Where to get it @zeezampresents on IG or Twitter
♦ HAIR RESCUE GROWTH OIL by ZeeZam Presents rating 7/10
This one was a freebie given to me by ZeeZam. I’ve used it for a while now and I’ll say I’m happy with it. Main Ingredients fenugreek seed, black seed, henna, olive coconut palm-kernel castor neem and mint oils. Pros 100% natural. Reduces scalp dryness. The peppermint stimulates my scalp and that tingling sensation is everything (hair growth). Added benefit of conditioning the hair. Cons (Packaging) Didn’t like that I had to use a separate dropper to retrieve the oil from the bottle unto my scalp although I believe they’ve launched a new spray bottle container for this product. Price Goes for N1500.00 Where to get it @zeezampresents on IG or Twitter
♦ 400ml AUSSIE MOIST CONDITIONERrating 8.5/10
So this is one product that’s the rave in the natural hair community. It’s an American brand and I’d already given up on ever finding it in Nigeria until I luckily spotted it at a vendor stand during the African Hair Summit event. Main Ingredients water, steryl & cetyl alcohol, fragrance, aloe barnadensis leaf extract, jojoba seed oil, etc. Pros Super hydrating & moisturising. Works very well for my co-washes. Makes my curls pop like crazy! Makes my hair evidently softer. Cons Good conditioner but not the best ingredients; this conditioner contains silicones which are known to create a film over the hair stands, can apparently only be removed using sulphate shampoos, and also contributes to product build up. (So far though this has not been much of an issue for me, guess i’ll discontinue use if I experience any problems over time). Also, I’d recommend the larger bottle as this 400ml doesn’t last that long, especially if you are heavy-handed with conditioners. Price Pretty affordable at N2255.00 Where to get it Maramma Beauty Store Abuja (Gwarinpa & Central Area)
♦ PROTECTIVE MIST BODIFIER OIL by Taliah Waajid rating 6/10
This product’s ideal for the lazy or on-the-go natural. Especially when you do not have the time or patience for the LCO moisture technique; spray it on your braids or up dos and you’re good to go! Main Ingredients water, propanediol, vegetable glycerine, cetearyl alcohol & cetrimonium bromide, cetyl alcohol, olive oil, wheat germ extract, etc. Pros From the list of ingredients, i’d say about 45% natural. Easy, quick and convenient to apply. Evidently softer hair and aids with detangling. Cons My first use was really nice and I loved it. By my 2nd use, I did not like how my hair felt as it was frizzy and did not stay moisturised for as long as it’d initially. Basically my main issue with this product is it builds up real quick, and this can impede hair growth. I recommend it be used no more than twice in between washes. Price Between N2500.00 – N2800.00 Where to get it Invivo Ceddi Plaza..there’s also a branch in Lagos.
I actually purchased this for curls and twist-outs but it ended up being my staple leave-in conditioner because of it’s super moisturising quality. I believe this product is for finer, softer textures (because it’s for kids), so I wouldn’t recommend it for more coarse textures. Main Ingredients Aqua….and several other ingredients that I can neither pronounce nor spell right now ? Pros Softer hair. Super hydrating & moisturising, gives my hair longer lasting moisture. Cons I think aqua (water) is the only natural ingredient I spotted in that crazy ingredient list. *No comment* ? Price N3050.00 Where to get it Invivo Abuja
Trust me to save the best for last! I’ve always been team Shea Moisture so it was no surprise how much I loved this one. This is my fave product of the moment. Main Ingredients Water, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Stearyl & Cetyl Alcohol, Mango Seed Butter, Peppermint Leaf Extract, Rosemary Leaf Oil, Sage, and an array of others. Pros Love that more than 80% of shea moisture ingredients are natural! And can we have a moment for the scent of this butter? It smells heavenly!
This product defines my curls really well and has a thick consistency which means a little goes a long way. Very moisturising, easily absorbed, softens my hair, reduces frizz and tames fly-aways pretty well. Cons Only con really is the price point for the size. But the thickness of the butter and its effectiveness makes it worth it for me. Price N4900.00 Where to get it Perfect Trust
I do hope this was informative and at the same time, helpful.
