2018 has been the year of the chébé powder craze within the natural hair community. I found the idea behind it and its proven effectiveness quite intriguing, yet the process of application seemed way too tedious, messy and inflexible, so I never bothered to join the rave.
Well, not until I stumbled on a picture of the creamy Chebe Butter Mix by Nigerian natural hair brand, Zeezam Presents (@zeezampresents on twitter & IG). It looked so yummy that I instantly placed an order.
At the point of collection, I was advised by the brand owner that the butter mix works best with the Leave-in Conditioning Milk (which I got free). So for the sake of comparison, I tried a separate leave-in conditioner with the butter mix, and true to her words, my hair was not as hydrated as when I’d previously used the conditioning milk and chebe-butter-mix combo!
I love that the leave-in milk is light on the hair and does not cause product build up.
If your goal is Length & Moisture Retention, Stronger Strands & Reduced Breakage, then you should try it! Chébé is known to hydrate & assist the hair in retaining moisture for longer, while strengthening the strands.
With this butter, I get the best of both worlds; I get to enjoy the amazing qualities of the Chébé powder (without having to deal with the messiness that usually comes with directly applying the powder on its own). I also get to style my hair in my favourite protective styles (without worrying much about washing out the Chébé first) because for some reason, the Chébé particles in the butter mix are not visible after application; my hair absorbs the product quite well.
1. Spritz lukewarm water on small section of clean hair. Lukewarm water aids product absorption.
2. Spray leave-in conditioning milk to wet section.
3. OPTIONAL – Apply moisturising cream of your choice (I use the strengthen & grow braid butter by Shea Moisture).
4. To lock in all the moisture, apply generous amount of the Chébé butter to section and twist/plait the section to keep hair stretched.
Repeat above steps through out your hair and style as you like.
